What to Wear for Autumn/Winter 2014 - part 3

Here is part 3 of my series on what to wear this season Autumn/Winter 2014 which will cover accessory trends, shoes, denim, small trends and what to pull back from your wardrobe archives that is still trending.

Small trends (gaining momentum):

Pastels - pastels are currently huge in the Northern Hemisphere for their spring and are going to be huge in the Southern come summer so why not start investing now?  Big news will be a pastel pink coat or a leather biker.  If you are not willing to spend so much then why not try some jumpers or t-shirts to layer for winter?  It will be well worth buying up on pastels come spring sales online so keep your eye on those.

Think pastel blues, pinks, yellow, lilac, lavender and mint.  Pink being the most popular hue everywhere right now!

Winter Floral -  Usually considered more of a spring look floral is still going strong for winter.  Try bigger patterns in darker colours or keep it simple with a more subtle look.

Other trends - sheer fabrics, animal prints (especially in shoes and accessories), art prints, tartan, monochrome, navy and bold colours.

Denim Trends:

Denim is a staple in most modern wardrobes and there is more variety than ever these days.  We have seen a great deal of denim showing up in the last few seasons and it is not going anywhere.  Double denim (wearing two denim items together) is still going strong and we are now seeing the most popular jeans are The Boyfriend, The Skinny Crop and The Mum Jean.  Also look for wide leg denim which is about to make a comeback.  High waists are popular if you can pull them off and also for the younger set dungarees and ripped jeans are still going strong as a popular look. Try Sass and Bide, Asos, Smith and Caughey (Not my daughters jeans), Country Road and Witchery for great denim styles.

Accessories for Autumn/Winter 2014

Hats have been a big look reappearing, mostly the beanie style in either bright colours or pastels but also popular in camel, black and grey.  Floppy Hats are also big this winter again but not just in black in pink, grey and lavender.  Caps are also still popular with different fabrics and textures such as leather, snake embossed and felt. I personally love hats and in winter they are so practical for keeping your hair dry and keeping you warm!  Try Asos, Glassons, Witchery and Max

Asos Pink Beanie - $18.08 NZ

Asos Lilac Hat - $45.20 NZ

River Island Black Hat from Asos - $63.28 NZ

Glassons Hat in Rust - $29.99 NZ

Statement Necklaces don't seem to be going anywhere and are still a really popular trend.  Try pearls which are currently trending, layering 2-3 big necklaces, a bold coloured necklace with a patterned top or something sparkly with a plain t-shirt to create balance for day wear.  Try - River Island, Lovisa, Colette by Colette Hayman, Witchery, Zara (if you are somewhere with a Zara) and Bauble Bar.
 Lovisa Necklace - $69 NZ

 River Island Statement Necklace

Karen Walker Guru Necklace $65 NZ

Layering jewellery is also trending with the trend of wearing multiple bracelets and rings being a big hit. Have fun mixing your collection of bangles, bracelets, and cuffs together!  Try Lovisa, Shopbop and Karen Walker.

Scarves are a staple in any wardrobe and never date.  Opt of a bulk wool scarf to keep warm or try a small silk scarf tied in a bow or attached to your handbag.  Also trending is the pussy bow which has always been a staple of the Yves Saint Laurent look.  Try - Shopbop, Asos, Witchery, Country Road and Karen Walker.

 Asos Snood - $45.20 NZ

Shoes and Boots - Boots are obviously a winter stable but what is currently trending?  There is a huge variety to choose from this season including plenty of comfort!  I love winter for boot season because boots give you the flexibility to add insoles and comfy socks which make all day wearing so much easier.

Ankle boots are still huge so pull out your ones from last season - look for simple classic styles or try some embellishment with zips, studs or excess buckles.  Animal prints, black and white, navy and tans are popular and white boots are also the new look of the season.  Heels, wedges or flats ankle boots are a winner.

Over the knee or thigh high boots are also big again this season worn with skinny jeans or a shorter length skirt.  These boots always make a statement and best of all they are warm!  Flat or small heel options are best so as to create the right image - more fashion than stripper!

Boots to the knee are also still ticking along - keep them looser around the calf for a more flattering look and also try worn under a midi skirt or with a small gap between your skirt and the top of the boot.

Shoes that are currently trending are sneakers, these have been a big feature in Street Style and recently showed up again at Fashion month for SS14/15.  Last year it was all about the wedge sneaker but heights are dropping and embellished sneakers are set to take off.

The point toe court shoe is still a big trend, as is the shoetie (shoe/boot) and the loafer is overtaking the ballet flat and slippers from past seasons.  Lace up stilettos and shoes with artistic qualities are also popular.

For the younger crowd socks with shoes and boots is a great trend, just get the proportions right!
